Essential Oils and ALL THINGS FALL

At my last make-and-take class, we played with a lot of Young Living's Fall scented Essential Oils.  Some of my favorites are: Clove, Nutmeg, Cinnamon Bark, Orange and the Thieves Blend. Here are a few of the recipes:

I use this scrub on my face, hands, feet, arms.. just about ANYWHERE!!  This recipe easily fits in a 4 oz jelly jar.

Pumpkin Spice Room Spray

1 Tablespoon Vodka or Witch Hazel
12 drops Clove Essential Oil
12 Drops Orange Essential Oil
5 drops Cinnamon Essential Oil
1 cup distilled water
Spray bottle

Add vodka, then essential oils to spray bottle.  Top off with 1 cup of water.  Attach lid and label.

Thieves Foaming Hand Soap

3 T. Bronners Castile Soap
1/2 t. vegetable glycerin
4 drops Thieves Essential Oil
Distilled Water

Add all ingredients to a foaming soap dispenser!

If you do not wish to make this one on your own, Young Living offers Thieves Foaming Hand Soap for purchase: individually, in a 3-pack, or as a refill concentrate. (They also offer Lavender Foaming Hand Soap!!)

*Not all essential oils are created equally. Most essential oils that you buy in stores are not pure and could do harm if applied topically, breathed in or ingested.  Do your research as to which oils are safe.  I have spent hours upon hours of looking into Young Living and I fully trust their process in extracting essential oils without harsh chemicals or high temperatures.

There are a lot of essential oils mentioned in this post and most of them come in a fabulous starter kit.  Want to know where to get them?  Follow this link HERE.  Be sure to check it out!

Using Essential Oils to Support Your Hair

There are many essential oils that can support support healthy hair and scalp.

How our hair looks, feels and grows can change based on -
~What we put on it (shampoos or hair products that contain harmful chemicals)
~What we do (using a hair dryer, flat iron, color treating)
~What we eat and drink (good for body=good for hair)·
~Genetics
~Sleep quantity and quality
~Our stress level

Incorporating essential oils can be as simple as adding several drops to your bottle of shampoo.  Or, you can add a couple of drops to your hand during each shampoo.  Here are some suggestions for essential oils to use:

Lavender- Deep conditions hair
Rosemary – Supports hair growth, supports circulation in scalp
Cedarwood – Supports hair growth, stimulates scalp
Geranium – Supports hair strength
Ylang Ylang – Increases appearance of healthy, shiny hair
Clary Sage – Supports hair growth stimulates scalp
Tea Tree – Helps maintain healthy looking scalp/hair

But, what is my hair type and what oils do I use?

Oils for Normal Hair

Normal hair is neither oily or dry and has not been colored or treated.
These oils are best for normal hair:
·       Lavender, Rosemary, Cedarwood, Lemon, Geranium, Thyme, Clary Sage

DIY:

Or... Add 3 drops of a hair care conditioner serum (recipe below) to a hair brush or comb. The hair will absorb the scent as the oil conditions hair.

Oils for Dry Hair

Dry hair looks dull, tangles easily, and has split ends.  For dry hair, we want essential oils that stimulate the sebaceous glands in the scalp to produce more oil!
Use these oils:
·       Lavender, Rosemary, Cedarwood, Patchouli, Geranium, Sandalwood,

DIY:

Directions: Add the Essential Oils to the dropper bottle.  Fill the remaining bottle with Jojoba oil.  Using the dropper, apply oil mixture all over scalp.  Let sit for at 30 minutes, then shampoo as normal.

Oils for Oily Hair

Oily hair looks greasy and these oils are best for oily hair:
·       Lavender, Rosemary, Lemon, Cypress, Tea Tree, Peppermint

DIY: Dry Shampoo
~Don’t wash every day because shampoo strips natural oils that keep your hair nourished and shiny.
~A lot of aerosols (dry shampoos on market) have chemicals like propane, butane, and aluminum in them.

*Not all essential oils are created equally. Most essential oils that you buy in stores are not pure and could do harm if applied topically or ingested.  Do your research as to which oils are safe.  I have spent hours upon hours of looking into Young Living and I fully trust their process in extracting essential oils without harsh chemicals or high temperatures.

No more STINKY DOG

Stinky dogs.  No thank you.

We have two doggie fur babies in our family.  Penny is our Jack RusselTerrier mix.  She is low-maintenance, prefers not to exert herself, and loves to eat excessively.  Mack is our German Short-hair.  He is everything opposite of Penny: loud, playful, goofy, high-energy, and can outrun you on your bike.

My sweet girl, Izzy, loves to care for Penny.  She bathes her and brushes her fur and takes her on walks.  Poor Mack does not get the same attention, as bathing him requires multiple adults at the same time.  His baths are few and far between.

The solution?  An in-between Dog Deodorant Mist.  If you aren't wanting your house to smell like a kennel and your dogs to smell like they have a buzzard strapped to their chests, then try this easy DIY mist.  It is cheap to make, and has no perfumes, dyes, parabens, phthalates, or alcohol.

There are a variety of Essential Oils to use.  Here are a couple great combinations:

10 drops Lavender* and 5 drops Purification* ~ For the dog in your life that stinks and has sensitive skin.

10 drops Lavender* and 5 drops Tea Tree* ~ For the dog in your life that has skin irritations and may need additional support deterring outdoor annoyances.

10 drops R.C.* and 5 drops Lavender ~ For the dog in your life that needs extra support for his/her respiratory system.

15 drops Stress Away* or Peace and Calming* ~ For the dog in your life that needs to smell good and calm the heck down.

Penny is more of a Lavender and Tea Tree kinda gal.  Mack leans towards the Stress Away blend. Ha!

Young Living also offers a great line of Essential Oil products for pet and animal care.  From shampoos and ointments to oil blends that support digestion, support healing, and deter annoyances. Here is a link to their product line: Animal Care

Essential Oils aren't just for dogs!  They are becoming increasingly popular in the daily routine for horses as well!  Check out this great article:  My Home Remedies for Horses includes Essential Oils, Does Yours?

I will fool you with my serious face.  I'm intently watching that beef jerky in your hand.
Don't make any sudden movements or it's mine.
Did someone say beef jerky?
Beef jerky.. wait, there's a bird.. wait, look at that leaf falling.  OMG, is that a car passing?
And just to keep it real.. These are how most of my pictures with Mack turn out.  It is a MIRACLE
to get him still enough for a picture!!

Replacing Common Household Cleaning Products with Essential Oils

Transitioning your home to be toxin-free is a lot of work.  From buying ketchup without high fructose corn syrup to switching to aluminum-free deodorant, it can all be exhausting.  There's a lot to learn, a lot to remember, and good heavens, a lot to balance in a non-anxiety kind of way.

This may be stating the obvious, but if you are just beginning your journey in going non-toxic, start by removing the most toxic items in your house.   Ahem.. your cleaning products.  If the labels clearly state they are harmful to pets and humans, then why should they be used in our homes?

Chemicals in cleaning products can enter our bodies through absorption into our skin from touch and ingestion from residues left on eating utensils.  We can also breath fumes or aerosol particles into our lungs.  These chemicals and fragrances can often cause allergies,  headaches, and breathing difficulties.  Over time, toxins can build up in our bodies and cause series health problems.  While it is impossible to avoid exposure to toxins, it is possible to reduce your family's exposure.

Do your own research on cleaning products for your home.  EWG is a great website that grades products based on their toxicity.  You can search any product or any ingredient in a products.  HERE is the link to their cleaning products page.

First up, an easy DIY dusting spray.  I have used this on all my wood surfaces in my house.  I even used it on my stainless steel oven for a great shine!!  Want to read about how a popular dusting spray measured up on EWG?  Check THIS out.

NON-TOXIC DUSTING SPRAY
½ cup olive oil
½ cup water
1 tablespoon vinegar
15 drops Orange EO*
10 drops Lemon EO*
5 drops Clove EO*

Add all ingredients to a 4 oz spray bottle and shake before each use.

Next, onto a bathroom spray.  This is a copycat Poopourri Spray.  If you have not heard about this spray before, you're in for a real treat!  This type of spray is different from others because you spray it in the bowl before you go!  The essential oils and glycerin will create a barrier over the top of the water trapping all of the waste and odor below the barrier.  So very interesting.  Check out EWG's review of a common air freshener HERE.  Eek.

POO-AWAY SPRAY
½ teaspoon glycerine
15 drops Lemon EO*
10 drops Orange EO*
5 drops Bergamont EO*

Fill remainder of a 2 oz spray bottle with water.

Finally, how about a carpet deodorizer?  I've always loved to use them because they keep on giving.  Next time you vacuum, you get to smell it again!! :)

In addition, I've got some GREAT options to safely clean your house.  If you haven't heard of Thieves Household Cleaner, you are missing out.

I use this cleaner on MOST of the surfaces in my home.  From windows to floors to counter tops.  It is phenomenal  And it lasts FOREVER.  The bottle comes in a concentrated form and you will only need 1 tablespoon of cleaner to 2 cups of water.  Young Living also has other options for natural cleaning including laundry detergent, dish soap, veggie soak, ect...  Check it out HERE.

So, there you have it.  Start with your cleaners.  Buy natural when you can or simply make your own.  It's so easy and absolutely worth it.

Using Essential Oils to Support Fitness

Did you know you can use essential oils as part of your everyday fitness routine?  They are an amazing source of support and motivation!  Although there are so many options for using essential oils when you exercise, I'm going to share what works for me.  Let's start with what to use before you exercise.

Valor* -  Essential oil blend of Spruce, Blue Tansy, Frankincense, and Rosewood.

Valor II* - Essential oil blend of Ylang Ylang, Rosewood, Northern Lights Black Spruce, Idaho Blue Spruce, Frankincense, Vetiver, Cistus, Bergamont, Cassia, and Roman Chamomile

While each blend has a different fragrance, they both are created for the same purpose.  They are both empowering and uplifting and definitely motivate and drive you through you exercise routine.  I apply to the insides of each of my wrists and to my chest before I go running or strength training.

Peppermint* -  This essential oil single is known for its ability to support digestion and promoting healthy intestinal function.  However, it can also support the respiratory system as well as provide energy.  I either add a drop of peppermint oil to my water (glass water bottle only!) or put a drop under my tongue (if you can stand it!).  I would also apply to my chest with a carrier oil or inhale it directly from the bottle.

How about during exercise?

Adding a drop or two of Lemon* to your water helps support your circulatory system.  As you exercise, your circulatory system transports oxygen through your body.  Lemon oil supports this process, resulting in increased energy.  It also supports your immune system as well as helps balance your acidity level during a workout.  This is important to minimize muscle soreness afterwards.

Citrus Fresh* - This is an essential oil blend of Orange, Tangerine, Grapefruit, Lemon, Mandarin, and Spearmint.  This blend has all the health benefits of Lemon, with the added benefits from the other essential oils.  I add this oil to my yoga towel so that I can breath it in every time I move through Chaturanga.

Now that you've put in all that hard work, it's time to rest.  Resting allows your muscles and heart to recover.  Make sure you drink a lot of water afterwards.  Being adequately hydrated can help out with muscle stiffness.  Despite all precautions, it is inevitable that I will be sore after an extra-vigorous work out.  Here is a simple DIY muscle rub.  After applying to the desired area, a warm compress would drive the oil in further.  If there is swelling with the soreness, I would recommend a cool compress.

Finally, it's hard to talk about exercise without talking about nutrition.  What you eat fuels your body's performance, recovery, and energy.  I can sum up the best nutritional diet in the following statement:  Whole foods are always the best option, with the majority of your diet being proteins, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.  Sugar should be at a minimal and avoid eating foods that contain ingredients you can't pronounce.

Young Living offers a variety of essential oil infused products that support your body in a myriad of ways.  I have previously written on the benefits of drinking Ningxia Red on a daily basis.  Check out their Slique Line as well as Young Living's blog on Exercise and Essential Oils.

Almond Oat Muffins

With all the hustle and bustle of back to school routines, I am always looking for healthy muffin recipes.  A muffin is such an easy something to grab for breakfast if you're late running out the door.... or to throw into a lunch box for a snack.  These muffins pack a little more protein in them because of the almond butter and oats.  If you do not have a sensitivity to gluten, then you can use whole wheat or white flour instead of the oat flour.  I've made them all different ways and I love them each time.

Almond Oat Muffins
2 cups oat flour*
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
2/3 cup almond butter
2 tablespoons coconut oil
1/2 cup brown sugar
2 eggs
3/4 cup milk**
3/4 cup dark chocolate chips

Directions:
Combine all ingredients until creamy, then add chocolate chips.  Spoon batter into lined muffin cups, filling 3/4 full.  Bake at 375 degrees for 15-18 minutes.  Store in an airtight container.

*My grocery store does not sell oat flour.  To make it, I simply grind up oats in the blender until it becomes flour.  It is super easy and does not take too much time!

**If you are trying to keep this recipe dairy-free as well, simply substitute almond or coconut milk for cows milk.

Back To School! Using Essential Oils in Your Daily Routine

August in Texas brings HOT afternoons... and ceiling fans and popsicles and sprinkler play.. basically anything to keep us cool.

August also brings excitement and anticipation as another school year is upon us.  We have purchased 2 brand new backpacks.  (My oldest will be using his for the 3rd year in a row.  Don't ask me how it has survived this long!  He loves it and I love the money saved!)  We have purchased binders and paper and pens and cute skirts and new tennis shoes.  We are gearing up for routines and predictability.  After school activities and music lessons.

This year is always going to be the best ever.  We can't wait to meet the teachers.  We can't wait to see our friends again.  Although I do mourn the loss of all our lazy schedules and time together, I am looking forward to newness.  Change.

Every new start to the school year comes with new ideas on how to make our schedules more efficient.  There is always room for improvement.  Reduce the crazy and aim for those beautiful mornings where we all sit together at the table for a well-rounded breakfast... HA!

Since essential oils have become part of our family's' daily routine, I'm going to share some ideas with you on how to incorporate essential oils into your home during the school year routine.  Here are the top 4 categories to focus on with back to school time!

1.  Defend your family's wellness.
2.  Reduce stress and promote rest.
3.  Healthy meals are a must.
4.  Energize, stimulate, and focus the brain.

1.  Defend your wellness by proactively supporting your family's immune system.

Longevity - powerful blend of Frankincense, Clove, Thyme, and Orange.  This is also offered in a softgel supplement.  All of these oils have optimal immunity support, with clove oil containing the highest antioxidants out of all measured food!

Thieves Essential Oil - supports a healthy immune system.  I will use this oil in my diffuser or apply topically as needed.  This is also available in a softgel supplement.

Ningxia Red - This is a powerful antioxidant drink.  All your kids will need is 1/2 - 1 oz of this juice each morning.  Send them off to school ready to fight off the germs!

Kidscents Mightyvites - delivers a full spectrum of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants for children, using only nutrient-dense, whole food sources.

 2.  Reduce stress and promote rest.

Stress away - Helps induce relaxation and reduces occasional nervous tension.  Diffuse or apply topically.

Lavender - Diffuse or apply topically at night for a restful sleep.

Isaiah 41:10 Blend - This is a great blend for reducing the occasional nerves that sometimes come with back to school!  We are adopting this verse for the school year.  It will be our constant reminder that there is nothing to fear about change and the uncertain.  God has an amazing plan for our year!  Mix oils together in a 15 ml bottle.  Add a roller ball attachment to the top.  Apply to feet, wrists, or back of neck as needed.

3.  Healthy Meals are a must.

Breakfast - Start the day with more than cereal.  I always try to load the kids up on protein.  It gets their brains focused and working!  Here a couple suggestions:
  • Greek Yogurt/Whole grain granola
  • Breakfast burrito with eggs, bacon, and cheese
  • Orange Creamsicle Smoothie
  • Whole grain waffles and nut butter
  • Boiled egg and Banana (for those mornings you are running out the door!)
  •

Lunch - This year, the kids are taking their lunch making into their own hands.  It is simply taking too much time out of my mornings and I cringe when the food I make gets dumped in the trash.  This way, they have the power to choose what they want and no food is wasted.  Win-win.  I made this chart for our refrigerator and you are more than welcome to download the PDF to use it:
PACK YOUR LUNCHBOX

After school snacks ideas:

4. Energize, Stimulate and Focus their thinking caps!

The diffuser is a powerful tool!  Here are some great diffusing combinations:

My personal favorites:
Morning wake up:  Peppermint/Orange
Homework focus: Rosemary/Lemon, Peppermint/Stress Away, Peppermint/Grapefruit

For those of us that have kiddos that need focus and concentration support, this is a great roller bottle blend:

I hope this has motivated you in your preparations for the school year!  Planning ahead always makes for a smooth transition.  Have a great year!

*Not all essential oils are created equally. Most essential oils that you buy in stores are not pure and could do harm if applied topically.  Do your research as to which oils are safe.  I have spent hours upon hours of looking into Young Living and I fully trust their process in extracting essential oils without harsh chemicals or high temperatures.

After-Sun Spray

The Texas Summer has been HOT this year.  And honestly, we haven't been in the sun as much as usual.  However, there have been those couple of instances where sun exposure has left its mark on shoulders, backs, or arms.  This homemade After-Sun Spray has been a great relief when needed.

Why did I choose these ingredients?
Aloe Vera - assists skin in healing after burns.  Read your labels when selecting an aloe vera gel for this recipe.  Most OTC aloe vera contains additional ingredients and color dyes. (I found mine at a local health food store.  You can easily find it on Amazon.)
Vitamin E - When applied topically, vitamin E interacts directly with the damaged skin cells, helping to prevent signs of aging as well as permanent skin damage.
Lavender - soothing to skin.
Peppermint - cooling to skin.
Copiaba - supports the body's natural response to injury and irritation

After-Sun Spray
2 T Aloe Vera
1 T Vitamin E
10 drops Lavender*
5 drops Peppermint*
5 drops Copiaba*

Directions:
Add all ingredients to a glass bottle.  Fill the remaining bottle with purified water.  Shake and apply to skin.

For this recipe, I used a 2 oz glass bottle found HERE at Abundant Health.  At only $.85 each, they are very affordable!  Of course you can use a larger bottle to make it more diluted or just a larger amount of spray!

Want to know where to get them?  Follow this link HERE.

Blueberry Tangerine Jam

Our family has an annual tradition of picking blueberries.  We brave the hot sun with no shade relief to pick pounds of blueberries.  We have blueberries coming out of our ears FOREVER.  The weeks that follow have us eating blueberry pie, muffins, pancakes, smoothies, ice cream, and my favorite: blueberry jam.

Canning has been on my bucket list forever! Three years ago, I finally faced my fear of killing off my family with botulism and canned my first batch of blueberry jam!  Since then, I have branched out to tomatoes, salsa, and jalapenos.  Although time consuming, this process has satisfied a deep longing in my soul to be able to provide nutritionally packed summer foods for my family in the middle of winter!

Here is my tried and true blueberry jam recipe.  And because I love incorporating essential oils into almost everything now, this year I have added Tangerine Essential Oil for an out-of-this-world flavor combination.

Ingredients:
10 cups blueberries (about 3.5 lbs)
1/4 cup bottled lemon juice
1/2 cup water
4 1/2 cups sugar
11 drops Tangerine Essential Oil*
1 box no sugar pectin

Directions:
1.     Sanitize jars and lids.
2.     Measure out 10 cups of raw blueberries.
3.     Crush the berries to end up with 6/7 cups berries.
4.     Measure out the sugar.
5.     Mix the pectin with ¼ cup of the sugar.
6.     Stir the pectin, water, and lemon juice into the blueberries and cook to a hard boil.
7.     Add the sugar and cook at a hard boil for 1 minute.
8.   Stir in the Tangerine Essential Oil*
9.     Fill the jars to within ¼ inch from the top.
10.  Wipe rims and put lids and rings on the jars.
11.  Process in a boiling water bath for 5-10 minutes.
Here is a great website that got me started with canning.  It has all you need to know about the equipment needed as well as the process itself.  PickYourOwn.org

If you are not wanting to dive into the full-blown canning experience yet, then this recipe can easily convert into a refrigerator jam.  Simple complete steps 1-10, then store your jam in the refrigerator for about 1-2 months.

*Only use therapeutic grade essential oils, which are safe to ingest.  Most essential oils that you buy in stores are not pure and could do harm if ingested.  Do your research as to which oils are safe.  I have spent hours upon hours of looking into Young Living and I fully trust their process in extracting essential oils without harsh chemicals or high temperatures.  Want to know where to get them?  Follow this link HERE.
